During Spring fashion week this year, I noticed all the Revlon chicks using what looked to be NEW REVLON COLORBURST BALMS. We’re all aware of my obsession with these, right? I searched and waited (press repeat several times) until this month, I finally found them! I picked a few up at Ulta and then found the full line at CVS.

Similar to the L’Oreal matte/lacquer line (which was limited edition and I mostly missed out on), the Revlon collection features both matte and glossy finishes and is part of the permanent range. While the original crayon/balm formula was also a stain, the new collection doesn’t claim to be that – although darker shades tend to have a longer lasting effect usually.

I LOVE the idea of having a matte lipstick in this format – something about a crayon makes it seem a bit less cumbersome than a traditional tube. The matte balms really remind me of the Tarte Matte Lipsurgence that I’m so in love with. They have a similar feel on lips – not too drying but definitely no shine. They wear well, although I find you get a longer wear time if you use a lip liner and blot lightly with a tissue. They have a fairly strong peppermint scent that I love! My favorite of the matte shades are Standout (the most perfect deep red) and Showy (a bright pink that perfectly matches my hair).

As for the lacquer finish, I find it to be a bit similar to the traditional balm stains but with a little more pigmentation and a LOT more glitter. In fact, if you’re not a fan of glitter in your lip products, these might end up feeling slightly too grainy for you. I really like the color Whimsical, a bright fuchsia pink. I find that the glitter doesn’t bother me too much – I re-apply often enough that I’ve not had the problem of leftover glitter particles just hanging out on dry lips – but I CAN see that being a problem if you don’t stay on top of application throughout the day (say every 3-4 hours).

All in all, the mattes are hands down my favorite of the two formulas. If you love or were thinking of trying the Tarte Mattes you may save yourself a few dollars and give these a shot first. The shade range is fairly large as well, so you may want to grab more than one!
